Risk warning: CFDs and spot forex are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. A large share of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs. Consider whether you understand how they work and whether you can afford to lose your money. Lotsight publishes independent reviews, not personal financial advice.

FP Markets Review: Does IRESS Make It More Than Another Raw Account?

We traded FP Markets' Raw account on MT5 and cTrader, checked its $3-per-side commission against IC Markets and Pepperstone, and looked at what the IRESS platform adds for anyone who also wants direct market access to shares.

8.0/10 overall score

Best for: Traders who want raw forex pricing and direct market access to shares on one login

FP Markets' Raw account charges $3 per side, a dollar cheaper per round turn than IC Markets' MT4 and MT5 pricing, and independent spread tests put it in the same tight tier as IC Markets and Pepperstone. What actually separates it is IRESS, a direct market access platform into shares across nine exchanges that neither of those rivals offers. A raw-spread scalper who only trades forex should still price all three; a trader who wants shares alongside currency pairs has a real reason to pick FP Markets first.

FP Markets gets pitched as a third option next to IC Markets and Pepperstone, the two raw-spread brokers most of our readers ask about first. We opened a Raw account, ran it through MT5 and cTrader, and then looked at the one thing neither of those two rivals actually offers: IRESS, a direct market access platform for shares.

Pricing against the two brokers everyone compares it to

Raw account commission is $3 per side on MT4, MT5 and cTrader, which totals $6 on a round-turn lot. That is a dollar cheaper than IC Markets' MT4/MT5 commission of $3.50 per side, $7 round turn, though it lands roughly level with IC Markets' own cTrader pricing of $3 per side. Independent testing we cross-checked put FP Markets' average EUR/USD spread on Raw somewhere between 0.05 and 0.1 pips, tight enough to sit in the same bracket as IC Markets and Pepperstone rather than trailing them.

None of that makes FP Markets an obvious winner on cost alone. The three brokers trade blows depending on the exact pair, the time of day and which platform you pick, and a scalper running serious volume should still benchmark live spreads on all three before committing capital. What FP Markets wins outright is the $6 round turn against IC Markets' $7 on MetaTrader, a saving that adds up fast for anyone trading dozens of lots a week.

Run the numbers on a busy week and the gap stops being trivial. A trader placing 40 standard lots pays $240 in commission on FP Markets' Raw account against $280 on IC Markets' MT4/MT5 tier, a $40 difference before spread is even counted. cTrader closes that gap almost entirely, since FP Markets prices its cTrader Raw commission at the same $3 per side as MT4 and MT5, matching rather than beating IC Markets' own cTrader rate. The lesson for a cost-driven trader is to pick the platform first and the broker second: the commission advantage lives on MetaTrader, not cTrader.

IRESS: the feature IC Markets and Pepperstone don't have

The standard MT4/MT5/cTrader trio is table stakes at this point; every serious raw-spread broker offers it. FP Markets also runs IRESS, a direct market access platform with Level 2 order books across more than 10,000 share CFDs on nine exchanges including the ASX, NYSE, NASDAQ and LSE. That is a genuinely different product from a MetaTrader CFD fill: Level 2 shows the order book depth rather than a single synthetic quote, closer to how an equities trader would actually work an order.

It is not bundled free with the Raw account. IRESS carries its own minimum deposit, close to $1,000 depending on region, and its own commission schedule separate from forex pricing. A trader who only wants currency pairs gets no benefit from IRESS existing; a trader who wants to run forex and equities from a single broker gets something IC Markets and Pepperstone simply do not offer.

Regulation and the leverage ceiling

FP Markets holds three licences: ASIC in Australia (AFSL 286354), CySEC in Cyprus (371/18), and the FSCA in South Africa (50926). The ASIC and CySEC entities cap retail leverage on major pairs at 30:1 under the same rules that bind IC Markets and Pepperstone's own tier-one entities, so nobody should expect the higher leverage headline numbers some offshore brokers advertise. Negative balance protection and AFCA dispute access apply on the ASIC retail tier, which is the entity most readers in Australia, the UK and Europe will land on.

There is no NFA registration here, so this is not an option for a trader based in the United States; that box is filled elsewhere on this site by brokers built specifically for the NFA framework. Clients placed with the CySEC entity get access to the Investor Compensation Fund up to 20,000 euros, a backstop worth knowing about even though nobody should plan around needing it.

Verdict

Judge FP Markets purely on forex cost and it trades blows with IC Markets and Pepperstone rather than beating them outright, though its MT4/MT5 commission is a clean dollar cheaper per round turn. Judge it as a single account for forex and share CFDs and IRESS gives it a real edge neither rival can match. We would send a pure scalper to compare live spreads across all three first, but a trader who wants both markets under one login should start here.

What we liked

  • Raw account commission of $3 per side, $6 round turn, undercuts IC Markets' MT4/MT5 rate by $1
  • Independent tests place average EUR/USD spread near 0.05 to 0.1 pips on Raw
  • IRESS gives Level 2 direct market access to 10,000+ share CFDs across nine exchanges
  • Three regulators cover the account: ASIC, CySEC and the FSCA

What held it back

  • ASIC and CySEC accounts trade majors under the same 30:1 cap as every other AU/EU-regulated broker
  • IRESS needs a separate deposit near $1,000 and runs its own commission schedule
  • cTrader Raw commission mirrors the MT4 and MT5 rate instead of undercutting it
  • No NFA registration, so residents of the United States cannot open an account
