Risk warning: CFDs and spot forex are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. A large share of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs. Consider whether you understand how they work and whether you can afford to lose your money. Lotsight publishes independent reviews, not personal financial advice.

ActivTrades Review: Does Extra Insurance Make This a Safer Mid-Size Broker?

ActivTrades backs its FCA licence with Lloyd's of London insurance above the standard compensation scheme and built its own platform, ActivTrader, alongside MT4 and MT5. We checked what that safety net actually covers and whether the platform choice is worth making.

7.7/10 overall score

Best for: UK and EU traders who want FCA regulation plus insurance coverage above the standard scheme, on any of three platforms

ActivTrades earns the safety reputation it markets: an FCA licence backed by Lloyd's insurance up to 1,000,000 pounds is a real step above the standard 85,000-pound compensation scheme, and the offshore Corp entity carries its own separate coverage rather than none at all. ActivTrader adds a genuinely useful trailing-stop feature MT4 lacks natively, though most of what it offers is also available through the more familiar MT4 or MT5 login. A trader choosing ActivTrades for the insurance and the FCA name is choosing correctly.

ActivTrades has run since 2001 without the acquisitions and rebrands that reshaped most of its FCA-regulated peers, and it leads its pitch with safety rather than spread size. The claim worth testing is the insurance: coverage layered on top of the standard UK compensation scheme, extended even to the offshore entity most brokers leave unprotected. We checked what that insurance actually covers, then weighed ActivTrader, the firm's own platform, against just running MT4 or MT5 instead.

The insurance layer most brokers skip

Every FCA-regulated broker in the UK carries FSCS protection up to £85,000 per client if the firm fails, a baseline rather than a selling point. ActivTrades adds a second layer: Lloyd's of London insurance covering client funds up to £1,000,000, purchased at no direct cost to the client, sitting on top of that FSCS floor. What makes this more than a marketing line is that ActivTrades extends a parallel structure to ActivTrades Corp, the entity that onboards clients outside the UK and EU, with its own policy covering losses between $10,000 and $1,000,000 in an insolvency event. Most brokers concentrate their strongest protection in the flagship regulated entity and leave the offshore arm to fend for itself; ActivTrades did not take that shortcut.

Spread-only pricing, no minimum to start

ActivTrades prices forex on a spread-only model: no commission on currency pairs, quotes from 0.5 pips on major pairs, and no minimum deposit to open an account. That combination removes two common points of friction at once, the account-opening threshold and the commission line item that complicates comparing brokers on cost. It is not the tightest spread on the market; a dedicated raw-spread ECN broker will usually beat 0.5 pips once its own commission is subtracted out. What ActivTrades offers instead is simplicity: one number to evaluate per trade rather than a spread-plus-commission calculation.

ActivTrader earns its place, modestly

ActivTrader is ActivTrades' proprietary answer to a genuine gap: traders who want a modern interface without MT4's dated one, or MT5's steeper learning curve. It supports the same seven asset classes as the broker's MetaTrader accounts and adds a progressive trailing stop that lets a trader set two separate price tiers, tightening the stop distance automatically as a trade moves further into profit. That is a real feature MT4 does not offer natively.

Set against that, the honest read is that ActivTrader is an improvement in degree, not in kind. A trader already comfortable on MT4 or MT5 is not missing much by staying there, and TradingView integration covers most of the charting upgrade a trader might otherwise switch platforms for. ActivTrader is worth trying because it costs nothing extra to open, not because skipping it would be a mistake.

Where the FCA name stops applying

ActivTrades holds no CySEC licence, an unusual gap for a broker this established, and instead spreads its non-UK coverage across the FSC in Mauritius, the SCB in the Bahamas, CMVM in Portugal and BACEN in Brazil. EU retail clients under the FCA framework are capped at 1:2 leverage on major forex pairs, a ceiling set by regulation rather than by ActivTrades' own choice, and one that will frustrate a trader used to the higher multiples offshore brokers advertise. That ceiling is also part of the same safety trade-off the insurance represents: tighter leverage limits the damage a single bad trade can do, which is consistent with a broker that built its identity around protecting client funds rather than maximizing what a trader can borrow.

Support and account opening in practice

Opening the Individual account follows a standard flow: identity document, proof of address, and a short review period before a funded account goes live, the same pattern most regulated brokers now use after years of tightening anti-money-laundering rules. Support runs through live chat, phone and email during trading hours, and ActivTrades publishes its regulatory disclosures and entity structure clearly on its site rather than burying them in a footer link, a detail that matters once you have decided an insurance claim might someday need to reference which entity actually holds your funds.

The demo account mirrors live pricing and execution closely enough to be a fair test of ActivTrader or either MetaTrader build before committing real money, which is worth using given the platform choice on offer. A trader who has never used ActivTrader specifically should spend a week on the demo comparing its trailing-stop tool against a manually managed MT4 stop loss before deciding whether the switch is worth the adjustment.

Verdict

ActivTrades backs up its safety pitch with specifics that hold up under scrutiny: a real FCA licence, Lloyd's insurance that extends meaningfully above the FSCS floor, and a parallel policy for the entity most competitors leave bare. ActivTrader is a solid, no-cost option rather than a compelling reason on its own to switch platforms, and the 1:2 EU leverage cap will rule ActivTrades out for anyone shopping specifically for high leverage. Anyone prioritizing regulatory weight and insured downside over maximum leverage or the absolute tightest spread has found a broker that delivers what it claims. This is not personal financial advice, and CFDs carry a significant risk of loss.

What we liked

  • FCA licence (05367727) comes with Lloyd's of London insurance up to £1,000,000, on top of the FSCS's standard £85,000 protection
  • ActivTrades Corp, the offshore entity, carries separate insurance covering losses from $10,000 up to $1,000,000 rather than leaving those clients uninsured
  • No minimum deposit and spread-only forex pricing from 0.5 pips with no commission on currency pairs
  • Choice of three platforms: the proprietary ActivTrader, MT4, and MT5, all under one login

What held it back

  • EU retail clients are capped at 1:2 leverage under FCA and ESMA rules, far below what offshore-regulated brokers advertise
  • International clients trade under the FSC Mauritius or SCB Bahamas entities, both lighter-touch than the FCA
  • ActivTrader is a genuine platform but its feature edge over MT4, mainly the tiered trailing stop, is incremental rather than transformative
  • No CySEC licence, so EU clients who want a Cyprus-regulated entity specifically will not find one here
