CMC Markets Review: Is Next Generation Worth Leaving MetaTrader For?
We traded forex on CMC's own Next Generation platform, checked its pattern recognition scanner and client sentiment tool against a plain MT4 chart, and weighed the 0.7 pip standard spread against FX Active's commission pricing.
Best for: Traders who want built-in chart pattern scanning and sentiment data without paying extra for it
Next Generation earns its reputation: the pattern recognition scanner and client sentiment tool are genuinely useful and cost nothing extra, and 300-plus forex pairs is more breadth than most raw-spread brokers bother with. What it does not do is beat a raw-spread ECN account on price: the standard account averages around 0.7 pips on EUR/USD, and FX Active's commission pricing narrows that gap without closing it. A trader who values research tools and platform depth over the last tenth of a pip should choose CMC; a pure cost scalper should not.

CMC Markets sells its own platform hard: Next Generation, not MetaTrader, is what its marketing puts front and centre. We opened an account, traded forex on Next Generation for two weeks, then ran the same pairs through MT4 to see whether the proprietary platform earns the switch or just adds a login to remember.
What Next Generation actually adds
Two tools stood out. The pattern recognition scanner checks more than 120 instruments every 15 minutes for forming or completed chart patterns and drops a price projection box on anything it flags, work an MT4 trader would otherwise do by eye across dozens of charts. Client sentiment shows the percentage of CMC's own clients positioned long or short on each instrument, useful as a contrarian signal or a sanity check, and it costs nothing extra to use.
Neither tool exists on MT4, MT5 or TradingView, all three of which CMC also offers. Choosing CMC for the platforms alone and then trading exclusively on MT4 throws away the reason to be here; Next Generation is where the actual product lives. We tried replicating the pattern scanner's output by eye on MT4 across our usual eight-pair watchlist and needed close to twenty minutes to do what Next Generation surfaced automatically in the background, which is the entire case for staying on CMC's own software rather than treating it as just another MetaTrader broker with a nicer login page.
The pair count is real, the price is average
CMC quotes more than 300 forex pairs, a wider book than most raw-spread ECN brokers bother listing since most of their volume concentrates on a dozen majors anyway. For a trader who wants a genuine exotic cross, say a Scandinavian or emerging-market pair, without hunting for a specialist broker, that breadth matters more than it sounds on paper: several currency pairs we checked for a separate Nordic-markets story simply were not listed at two raw-spread brokers we tried first, and were sitting on CMC's list without any special account tier required.
